JAKARTA -- The world football federation (FIFA) ruled out Indonesia as the host for the U-20 World Cup after FIFA President Gianni Infantino held a meeting with PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir in Doha, Qatar, Wednesday (29/3/2023).

"FIFA has decided, taking into account the current situation, to cancel Indonesia from hosting the 2023 U-20 World Cup," said FIFA in a statement via its official website.

Responding to FIFA's statement, social media in Indonesia was enlivened by public anger which blamed parties who rejected Israel's presence. PDIP has become one of the most vocal parties in voicing their rejection of the Israeli national team's arrival at the U20 World Cup.

PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto asked the Indonesian public not to blame each other for Indonesia's cancellation of hosting the U-20 World Cup.

On the one hand, said Hasto, Indonesia does have a strong intention of building a reliable football team. On the other hand, Indonesia is also bound by historical tasks which must be carried out by refusing Israel to attend.

Hasto recalled how the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK) witnessed the history of the first president of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno, who declared his attitude against Israel. "Precisely by rejecting Israel, we have this magnificent and great Gelora Bung Karno," he said.

PDI Perjuangan, said Hasto, continues to consistently defend Palestine and asks the public to uphold the humanitarian aspect.
